Description: Given that the purpose of assessments (such as quizzes, tests, surveys, and observations) is to improve student learning, this course focuses on strategies and techniques for creating effective classroom assessments. As Stiggins (2001) stated, "Classroom assessment information is the essential fuel that powers the learning systems for students" (p. 18).

This Basic Concepts lesson begins by differentiating between formative and summative assessments and defining several target areas for assessments. Issues related to objectives and test reliability and validity are also included.
