Description:
This article relates how a class of elementary pre-service teachers used technology to share their thinking about a topic that is traditionally difficult to model and discuss--dividing fractions. One type of technology they used, a digital camera, was familiar to most students, but the other type, a SMART Board[TM], was relatively unfamiliar. Combining these technologies was new to everyone, including the instructor. Multiple factors impelled them to try this exploration with technology, particularly the desire to communicate about and unpack mathematical representations that are created when solving problems. The exploration offers some exciting possibilities for children to reason mathematically in their elementary classrooms. (Contains 6 figures.) |
